Michael Duetsch, Vice President, UPM Biochemicals Business Operations, joined UPM in 2011. He studied Chemistry at the universities of Hamburg, Göttingen and Paris-Sud. In 1994, he started his industrial career at Goldschmidt (today: Evonik) in research and development (R&D) followed by management positions in corporate strategy and controlling. He headed R&D as well as new business development departments within Evonik and BASF. During the last decade, his main responsibility was to lead a team creating a new business opportunity for biochemicals at UPM. As a result, UPM invests in a new industrial scale biorefinery in Leuna, Germany. In his current role, Michael Duetsch is responsible for a smooth business ramp-up covering production, supply chain management as well as sales & marketing for all products, i.e., mainly bio-monoethylene glycol and renewable functional fillers. He is also member of various panels dedicated to foster a sustainable bioeconomy (e.g., the Expert Advisory Board Bavarian Bioeconomy).
