Abstract: This talk presents our approach in dealing with problems in process engineering using computational intelligence methodologies. The improvement in computing power in the last decade has made it possible to develop methodologies such as evolutionary algorithms to deal with complex problems in various applications in science and industry. Additionally, large available data sets from simulations can contribute to unlock the power of the these algorithms. This talk presents our approach in learning physical laws using such unconventional methodologies. While the early attempts at applying these methodologies to real-world applications remained unsuccessful, we believe that, given the improvements of the algorithms in the last years and the large amount of available data and computing power, we can unlock their potentials.
