Optimizing waste collection for a circular economy
Transitioning from linear to circular supply chains is key to reducing waste, lowering material costs, and promoting sustainability. But how can companies efficiently manage the complexities of waste collection and processing?
Our recent study – published in OR Spectrum, one of the leading journals in supply chain and sustainability – introduces a dynamic multi-period recycling collection routing approach that addresses the uncertainties in waste material quality and availability. Using a stochastic lookahead method, we provide a solution that anticipates these uncertainties, reducing costs and improving inventory management over time.
Two case studies - one from real-world data in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and another from the UK - highlight the superior performance of our method and show how it not only addresses material loss and routing challenges, but also supports more sustainable practices.
